Retail Sales (Retail Sales)
Monthly measure of total receipts at retail stores. Key consumer spending indicator.
Retail Sales is the Census Bureau's monthly measure of consumer spending at retail establishments — everything from gas stations and grocery stores to auto dealers and online retailers. Released around the 15th of each month at 8:30 AM ET, it's one of the earliest reads on how the consumer — who drives roughly 70% of U.S. GDP — is holding up.
Traders and economists analyze several cuts of the data simultaneously. The headline number includes auto purchases, which are large and volatile. Retail sales ex-autos strips out cars for a cleaner read. The "control group" (excluding autos, gas, building materials, and food services) is the most important line because it feeds directly into the GDP personal consumption expenditures calculation — when economists model Q3 GDP in real time, the control group retail sales is one of the first inputs they update.
Strong retail sales create a familiar paradox: a resilient consumer is good for corporate earnings but potentially bad for equities if it signals the Fed has less reason to cut rates. The sectors that react most directly are consumer discretionary (XLY), retail ETFs (XRT), and individual names like WMT, TGT, COST, and AMZN. Weak retail sales push money toward defensives and rate-sensitive sectors.
Seasonal patterns matter enormously: the November and December holiday retail figures (released in December and January) move full-year retail earnings estimates for major chains and can set the sector's tone for the first quarter.
